Checking a picture that matters

Ask where it came from. Find the first person or news outlet that posted it.
Search for it. Google Lens or TinEye show where else it appears, including older copies.
Look closely. AI can get hands, writing, jewelry and reflections wrong, though newer tools make fewer mistakes.
Slow down when it asks for something. A picture of a loved one in trouble or a celebrity selling an investment? Check with someone you trust, using a number you already know.
