DEVICES & SUPPORT

“Remind me later” can wait too long. Turn on updates.

Updates fix security problems. Letting your devices install them on their own is one of the easiest protections there is.

THE SHORT VERSION

Turn on automatic updates for your phone, computer, browser and apps, and install important updates as soon as you can.

A familiar situation

Imagine your laptop has asked to update for two weeks and you keep choosing “Remind me later.” Many updates close security gaps, so each delay leaves that gap open.

1. Turn on automatic updates

CISA recommends turning on automatic updates in each device’s or app’s settings. Your device then installs them as soon as they’re available.

2. Install soon, not later

Install updates as soon as you can, especially critical ones. Give your web browser and security software extra attention.

3. Ask about devices that can’t

If a device or app has no automatic update option, CISA suggests asking the maker why. Products that can update themselves are easier to keep safe.

One thing to try today

On your phone, open Settings and find Software Update. Check that automatic updates are on. Do the same on your computer this week.
