AI Rules Checker

Paste your class’s or workplace’s rules about AI and say what you want to do. See whether it’s allowed, the exact lines that say so, and how to tell your teacher you used AI.

Try the sample below.

The rules

What to use

What they want to do: Use ChatGPT to brainstorm topics for my essay, then check my grammar before I turn it in.

Looks allowed

Yes. Your class allows AI for brainstorming and for checking grammar, as long as you add a note saying how you used it. Don’t let it write any of the essay’s sentences.

What the rules say

You may use AI tools such as ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, make an outline, or check grammar and spelling, as long as you say how you used them.
Brainstorming and grammar checks are both named.
You may not use AI to write any part of the final text you turn in.
Every sentence in the essay has to be yours.

How to do it

  1. Brainstorm topics with ChatGPT, then pick and outline one yourself.
  2. Write the essay in your own words.
  3. Ask AI to point out grammar and spelling mistakes, and fix them yourself.
  4. Add a short note at the end naming the tool and how you used it.

Don’t

  • Pasting sentences AI wrote into your essay, even reworded.
  • Using AI on take-home quizzes.

Saying you used AI

Add a note at the end of your paper, like: “I used ChatGPT to brainstorm topic ideas and to check my grammar and spelling. All of the writing is my own.”

Want to be sure? Send this

Hi Professor, for the essay I’d like to use ChatGPT to brainstorm topics and to check my grammar, and I’ll add a note saying how I used it. Is that okay?

This is a reading of the rules above, not official or legal advice. When in doubt, ask your teacher.
