Windows computer: “This popped up and won’t go away. Should I call the number?”
Looks like a scam
A web page made to look like a security warning. It says your computer is locked and tells you to call a support number.
Real security warnings never ask you to call a phone number. The countdown, the scary words and the odd web address are signs of a tech support scam. Your computer isn’t locked; it’s just a web page.
What to do
- Don’t call the number or click anything on the page, not even OK or Cancel.
- Close the browser tab. If it won’t close, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, choose your browser, then End task.
- When you open the browser again, don’t restore the tabs from last time.
- For peace of mind, run a scan with Windows Security, the protection that came with your computer.
- If you already called or let someone connect to your computer, call your bank with the number on your card, and change your passwords from another device.
Don’t
- Calling a number from a pop-up
- Letting a stranger connect to your computer
- Paying for “support” with gift cards or crypto
