What to use
Sample (made up): a web page that says the computer is locked, with a phone number to call for support.

Windows computer: “This popped up and won’t go away. Should I call the number?”

Looks like a scam

A web page made to look like a security warning. It says your computer is locked and tells you to call a support number.

Real security warnings never ask you to call a phone number. The countdown, the scary words and the odd web address are signs of a tech support scam. Your computer isn’t locked; it’s just a web page.

What to do

  1. Don’t call the number or click anything on the page, not even OK or Cancel.
  2. Close the browser tab. If it won’t close, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, choose your browser, then End task.
  3. When you open the browser again, don’t restore the tabs from last time.
  4. For peace of mind, run a scan with Windows Security, the protection that came with your computer.
  5. If you already called or let someone connect to your computer, call your bank with the number on your card, and change your passwords from another device.

Don’t

  • Calling a number from a pop-up
  • Letting a stranger connect to your computer
  • Paying for “support” with gift cards or crypto
